LSC athletes making a mark in New Zealand

A number of our LSC athletes have headed down under to get a second winter season in and there have been some fantastic results. Isla Ward came first and second in the NZ national champs slalom races and gained PBs in both. Isla is over there with team mates and fellow LSC athletes Charlotte Holmes and Honor Bartlett.

LSC centenary auction to raise funds for LSC athletes

As part of our centenary celebrations the club has very kindly been given a small number of items which we are auctioning to raise funds for our athletes. Donations include a day or half day’s skiing with some of our World Cup athletes, a painting of Flaine, a Ski Mo-Jo including personalised fitting, holiday apartment rental in Grindelwald, 2 Glyndebourne tickets with B&B accommodation, 3 night stays in a flat in Clerkenwell and a mews house in Stamford and 12 bottles of Swiss sparkling wine.

The auction will close at 10pm on Friday 22 September 2023 and highest bidders will be announced during the Centenary dinner celebrations.

Ski Instructor Training in Queenstown New Zealand - Summer 2023

One of our members, Emily Pocock, runs a ski instructor training business, Alpine Academy. Emily is a fully qualified Ski Instructor and BASI Examiner who splits her time between Verbier and Queenstown chasing winters!  Alpine Academy are offering a 9-week Level 1 & 2 Ski Instructor Course from 2 July to 1 September 2023 in Queenstown. This course is an incredible opportunity; it will improve your skiing, allow you to explore and live in New Zealand, gain a Ski Instructor qualification and obtain work experience. Entries are now open for the British Schoolgirls’ Indoor Races which will be held on Sunday 1 October 2023 at the Snozone in Milton Keynes. Entries will remain open until 31 July 2023 or when we have reached capacity if that is earlier. Please note your entry will only be confirmed once full payment has been made. Zermatt to Verbier ski touring challenge to raise funds for The Intensive Care Society

Members are invited to join The Intensive Care Society, a charity which supports intensive care staff across the country, in its 4 day Zermatt to Verbier challenge in March 2024. The costs of the challenge have been paid for by the lead sponsor, but each participant will be required to raise £5,000.

Jaz Taylor on the Telemark World Champtionships Podium

Jaz Taylor, one of our LSC athletes, had a fantastic performance at the World Championships in Mürren in March, getting a silver medal in the parallel sprint and a bronze medal in the Classic, giving her her most successful World Championships to date.

LSC Success at the 15th AICC in Cortina D'ampezzo

Over 35 LSC members visited Cortina last week for the 15th Amateur Inter Club Championships. LSC entered 5 teams across the different age bands. The LSC Over 60s team of Gayle Parsons, Marguerite Nice, Nikki Reed and Sheridan Killwick came first in their category. Sheridan Killwick was also the overall winner for the Ladies Over 60 category. Whist she was racing for Kandahar, LSC member Anna Griffin came first in the Ladies 45 to 59 category. Congratulations to you all!

A great time was had by all with some great skiing, good racing and wonderful hospitality from our hosts, the SC18 club!

LSC athletes on the World Cup podiums

There were great performances from two LSC athletes this weekend

  • Kirsty Muir was second in the Freeski Slopestyle competition at the Mammoth Mountain Freestyle World Cup

  • In Telemark, Jaz Taylor took third place in the second of two World Cup Sprint races in Les Contamines-Montjoie for her first podium of the season

Listen to the Centenary message from the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and Equality

We were joined at our centenary celebrations by 6 members of the Skade ski club, a Norwegian ski club which was established in 1889 in protest that the other ski club would not accept women! Skade is the oldest ski club for women in the world (LSC is the oldest women’s alpine ski club). The Norwegian Minister of Culture and Equality kiindly recorded the attached message for us

LSC's Centenary Reception - Monday 23 January 2023

70 guests joined the LSC in celebrating its 100th birthday at its birth place, The Palace Hotel in Mürren. Guests included The Deputy Head of Mission and Consul General from the British Embassy in Berne, friends from Kandahar Ski Club, Down Hill Only Club and Ski Club of GB, representatives from the Mürren Tourist Office and the Schilthornbahn, friends and residents from Mürren, Wengen, Grindelwald and the wider Jungfrau region and many members and their guests. The event was sponsored by Mürren Tourismus, Kandahar Ski Club and Ski Mo-Jo.

LSC 1920's Costumed Race 23 January 2023 in Mürren

As part of our Centenary Celebrations the LSC ran a 1920’s costumed race on the club’s birthday. Both competitors and spectators dressed up and lots of fun was had by all. The winner of the race was Emma Hinde and in joint second place were Barbara Hoppeler and Adrienne Kirk.

There was a prize for the best costume which was won by Katrina Clayton who was in a stunning outfit!
